Berry Men Lost at Covenant, 64-53

Box Score

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- Freshman Lee McCloud scored a career and game-high 14 points, but Berry College lost at Covenant, 64-53, on Thursday night. McCloud was 5-9 from the field and made 4-5 three-pointers.

With the defeat, Berry dropped to 3-10. Covenant, which won its sixth straight contest, improved to 10-4. The Scots have not lost since Berry won at the Cage Center on Nov. 15.

"Rebounding bit us," said Berry Head Coach Jeff Haarlow. "You give up 14 offensive rebounds to a team on the road, and it's tough to overcome that.

"I thought some timely turnovers hurt us, especially late in the half when we made a run. And I thought ultimately their defensive pressure bothered us a ton tonight. It wasn't necessarily in turnovers but in quick shots that took us away from the offensive stuff that we've been doing so well."

Covenant, which had a 44-33 advantage in rebounds, held a 33-26 lead at halftime.

Yet the Vikings rallied in the second half. Berry tied the Scots twice in the final period. The second time was with 7:043 left at 48-48 after McCloud made a jumper. The Scots then went on an 11-1 run and BC got no closer.

Jonathan Abrams added 13 points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals for the visitors.

The home team shot 43-percent to 33-percent for the Vikings. Sam Bowman led a balanced Covenant offense with 11 points. Eleven of the 12 Scot players who saw action scored in the game.

The Vikings host the Stormy Petrels in a conference game at 8 p.m. on Saturday night.

"It's a huge game.  It's the biggest game on our schedule right now," said Haarlow of Saturday's matchup at the Cage Center. "We've got to respond on Saturday."
