Box Score EMORY, Va. – Jonathan Abrams scored 20 points, but Berry College lost at Emory & Henry, 76-63, on Friday night. Berry dropped to 2-7; the Wasps improved to 2-5.
Devan Bruce pitched in 12 points and eight boards, while Mac Whalen had 10 points, four rebounds, and four steals.
The Vikings led at halftime, 28-24, and were ahead by as many as 10 points in the second half.
As a team, Emory & Henry shot 42.4 percent (25-for-59) for the game--including 51.6 percent (16-for-31) in the second half. The Wasps also held a 55-33 rebounding advantage, despite committing 21 turnovers.
"We did not do a good job on the boards, especially in the second half," said Berry Head Coach Jeff Haarlow. "Our team needs to be able to handle adversity on the road better."
Berry got out to a 7-1 lead 1:59 into the contest and pushed its advantage to eight (14-6) at the 14:21 mark. The Wasps battled back and closed the gap to 24-21 with 2:59 to go before the break. The Vikings took a 28-24 margin into the locker room.
After the break, Berry pushed its lead to 10--thanks to a 12-6 run over the first 3:54 of the second half. The teams traded baskets for the next four minutes and then E&H made its run. Down 48-38, the Wasps went on a 25-4 run that covered nearly seven minutes for a 63-52 lead with 4:51 to go in the game.
The Vikings closed the margin to eight with four minutes to go, but Emory & Henry pushed the lead to 13 with five-straight points en route to the 76-63 victory.
The victory was the second-straight for the Wasps, as four players reached double figures in scoring. E&H junior guard Stephen Brown led the way with 19 points and seven rebounds as he hit a game-high four three-pointers.
The Vikings host the University of Dallas this Sunday at 2 p.m.
