Box Score CLINTON, Miss. -- Berry Women's Basketball opened the year at the Zaxby's Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament on Friday. The Vikings lost to Howard Payne, 96-77.
Five Berry players reached double figures in scoring in the contest. Chanlir Segarra paced BC with 18 points. She was 7-13 from the field, made four three-point baskets, and dished a team-best seven assists.
The first half featured wide open play and hot shooting by both teams. The Vikings went on a 12-0 streak midway through the period and led most of the half. Segarra's three-pointer gave Berry its biggest lead, 14-5, at the 14:51 mark.
HPU, however, went on a run of its own and led 46-44 at the break. Berry outshot Howard Payne in the first half, 52 to 50-percent.
The Vikings never reclaimed the lead again. The Yellow Jackets continue its hot shooting (49-percent) in the final 20 minutes. Berry cooled off to 38-percent in the second half.
For Berry, Megan Walsh added 16 points and eight rebounds. Freshman Tara Mullinax came off the bench to shoot 6-7 from the field and collect 13 points. Alexa Evans added 11 and Danielle Sisk recorded 10 points for the Vikes.
Tresta Donahoo had a game-high 25 points for Howard Payne. She was 8-13 shooting and made five three-pointers.
HPU had a 42-35 lead in rebounds. Berry committed 26 turnovers to 17 for the Yellow Jackets.
Berry faces host Mississippi College at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
All proceeds from this weekend's tournament will go directly to the American Cancer Society.
