Hot Shooting Mountain Lions Handle Lady Vikings, 87-61

Berry College guard Mel McLean scored a team high 17 points, but Young Harris College defeated the Lady Vikings 87-61 in a women's basketball tilt at the Cage Center Saturday.

McLean came off the bench to drill four 3-pointers and hit 6-of-11 shots overall from the field.  She also dished out a pair of assists and picked up two steals.

But Young Harris' entire team was as hot as McLean, as the Mountain Lions hit 55 percent (38-for-69) of their shots in the game, including 54 percent in the first half and 56 percent in the second. 

YHC, led by former Berry coach Brenda Paul, took a 46-34 lead into the lockerroom at halftime, and then continued to pull away in the final 20 minutes.

Chanlir Segarra and Brooke Thomas joined McLean in double figures for the Lady Vikings (4-9).  Segarra finished with 16 points on 7-for-13 shooting and dished out five assists.  Thomas added 12 points and four rebounds.

Holli Gibbs came off the bench to grab a team high seven rebounds for Berry.

YHC's Ladondra Johnson was a force inside, hitting 10-of-14 shots for 20 points, while also hauling down a game-high nine rebounds.  Lauren Smith added 18 points and six assists and Kaycee Cash scored 13 points and grabbed eight boards for the Mountain Lions (12-2).

Berry is scheduled to return to action Jan. 14 at Rust College.
