Shorter Defeats Lady Vikings 102-64

Shorter University used a 31-5 run over the final 11:05 of the first half to break open a close ballgame before going on to defeat Berry College 102-64in a women's basketball game at Shorter's Winthrop-King Centre Monday evening.

The game's first 11 minutes were as close as it could be, with the score tied on six different occasions and neither team leading by more than four points.

But after Berry's Brooke Thomas drilled a 3-point shot that made the score 15-15 with 11:33 to play in the first half, Shorter embarked on a 12-0 run over the next three minutes to inch away from the Lady Vikings. 

Meanwhile, Shorter's defense would give up just a pair of free throws to Chanlir Segarra and a 3-pointer to Brittany Coughlan over the remainder of the half.

Shorter (15-4) would take a 46-20 lead into the intermission, and grow its lead to as many as 42 points in the second half.


Coughlan led Berry (6-10) with 18 points, while Segarra added 11 and Alexa Evans chipped in 10 for the Lady Vikings. 

Segarra and Pilar Smith each grabbed a team high five rebounds.

Brittney Smith led six Shorter players in double figures with 15 points.  Robyn Foster, Allison Danner and Chelsi Matthews all scored 12 points for the Lady Hawks, while Kelly Ellison and Megan Queen scored 11 each.

Berry is scheduled to return to action Saturday, when it hosts Rust College at 2 p.m.
