Box Score Vikings Fall On Late Goal For Second Straight Day, Guilford Drops Berry 2-1
For the second consecutive day, Berry's men's soccer team fell victim to a late score, falling 2-1 to Guilford College Sunday in Greensboro, N.C.
Guilford's Greg Carnovale broke a 1-1 tie in the 84th minute when he was able to tap in a loose ball with Berry goalkeeper Kevin Madigan out of the net. The goal would prove to be the match winner.
For Berry (2-2), the heartbreak came just a day after the Vikings fell to Averett 1-0 on an 89th minute score.
"It was a good game," Berry coach Richard Vardy said. "Both teams tried playing attractive soccer.
"It was a tough way to lose two games this weekend. We played a lot better today than we did Saturday, but could quite find the finishing touch."
Berry scored the match's first goal when freshman David Shaw found the net in the 36th minute after collecting a loose ball in the box, shaking a defender and firing from 12 yards out.
The Vikings' lead would stick until the 51st minute, when Guilford's Freddy Gomez scored over the top of Madigan after accepting a pass from Ronnie Castellanos.
Berry just missed a scoring opportunity in the match's final seconds, but Zak Wallingford's header was knocked away by a Guilford defender.
The Vikings outshot the Quakers 16-12 overall, and held a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal. Shaw, Wallingford and Daniel Wartner each attempted three shots.
Madigan finished with three saves for the Vikings. Guilford goalkeeper Peter Truitt recorded four saves.
Berry returns to action Sept. 18, when it plays its home opener against Virginia Wesleyan at Ford Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
