Compton Scores Game-High 20, But Shorter Tops Berry 67-59

ROME, Ga. - Berry's Holly Compton scored a game high 20 points, but Shorter defeated the Lady Vikings 67-59 in front of a packed house at Shorter's Winthrop-King Centre Monday.

After Shorter (19-5) went into the intermission with a 27-26 lead, the teams would stick close together for the entire second half. In fact,neither team leading by more than four points until Holly Compton drilled a 3-point shot from the top of the key with 9:29 remaining to make give Berry a 50-44 lead.

After Compton's trey, Shorter would run off 10 consecutive points to go ahead 54-50.  But Compton would answer with another 3-pointer to pull Berry (10-11) back to within a point with 5:45 on the clock.

Shorter would eventually go ahead 60-56 before Berry head coach Stephanie Dunn called timeout with 2:14 remaining to give her troops a rest. 

Shorter's Shelby Farrer came out of the timeout and hit a 3-point basket to give Shorter a 63-56 advantage, the Lady Hawks largest lead since it went ahead 25-18.

Kendall Davis would hit two free throws with 1:19 left, and Brittany Coughlan would make one-of-two charity shots with 42 seconds remaining to pull Berry to within 63-59. 

After Coughlan's free throw, Carol Lampley fouled SU's Robyn Foster, who made one of two free throws.  An offensive fould charged to Coughlan on the next possession gave Shorter the ball with 25 seconds to play.  Coughlan then committed her fifth foul, sending Kelly Ellison to the line, where she sealed the game with a two successful free throws.

Davis and Coughlan joined Compton in double figures for the Lady Vikings.  Davis scored 15 points and tied Alexa Evans for team-high honors with seven rebounds.  Coughlan added 12 points and six boards.

Damisha Moore led four Shorter players in doble figures with 17 points.  Farrer added 14 points and a game high eight boards, while Kelly Ellison scored 13 points and Robyn Foster chipped in 12.

Berry returns to action Saturday, when it hosts Berea College at 2 p.m.
