Rome, Ga. - Berry College's women's basketball team nearly broke a school 3-point shooting record in a 101-43 rout of Hiwassee College Wednesday evening at the Cage Center.
The Lady Vikings broke out to a 25-4 lead just over 10 minutes into the contest and cruised from there, extending the lead to as many as 62 points in the second half.
Berry hit 14 three-point shots in the game, just two short of the team record, set in a 94-57 win at Columbia College on Jan. 27, 2007. Berry was 16-for-31 in the game at Columbia. Wednesday, the Lady Vikings attempted 30 shots from beyond the arc.
The 101 points were the most scored by a Lady Vikings team since they defeated Columbia College 104-57 in Columbia, S.C., on Valentine's Day in 2005.
Berry led 51-17 at halftime against Hiwassee, and held an advantage of at least 40 points for the game's final 17-and-a-half minutes.
Just two Berry starters played more than 20 minutes in the game: Alexa Evans, who scored 19 points in 28 minutes, and Holly Compton, who scored eight points in 21 minutes.
For Compton, it was a well-deserved rest. The senior guard had played every minute in five of the past six games, including the previous four. Two of those six games went into overtime.
The Lady Vikings' Brittany Coughlan led all players with 22 points. Danielle Sisk came off the bench to score 12 points and grab eight rebounds.
Berry's Zoe Williams led all players with 11 rebounds, nine of which came on the offensive end of the floor. Teammate Kelly Hastings grabbed 10.
Williams and Hastings helped give Berry a decisive 69-36 rebounding advantage. Thirty two of the Lady Vikes' rebounds came off the offensive glass.
Maggie Trimble dished out eight assists, leading an unselfish effort in which Berry players assisted on 28 of the team's 40 field goals. Evans, Coughlan and Laura Gerdnic delivered five assists apiece.
Blaina Tallent led Hiwassee with 16 points, while Bethany Allen added 15 points and a team high eight rebounds.
Berry returns to action Tuesday, when it closes out the season at 6 p.m., against Covenant.
