Scots' Smith Converts Last-Second Layup; Coughlan Scores 17 Points to Lead Berry

Maryville's Tayler Smith scored on a layup with one second left in the game to give the host Scots a 69-68 victory over Berry in a women's basketball game in Maryville, Tenn., Saturday.

The Scots (4-3) led by four points at halftime, but Berry (3-5) scored nine straight points in the second half's first 2:19 to take a 40-35 lead.  And, while the Lady Vikings would lead for most of the second half, the advantage would never grow to more than five points.

In fact, the teams would find themselves tied six times in the second half, but each time Berry would score next and regain the lead.  After relinquising its lead early in the second half, Maryville wouldn't show a higher number on the scoreboard until Smith's game-winning layup.

Berry led for all but 3:06 in the game.

Brittany Coughlan led Berry with 17 points, while Alexa Evans and Chanlir Segarra scored 16 apiece for the Lady Vikings.

Megan Walsh just missed a double-double, tallying nine points and 11 rebounds, while also recording three blocks and a pair or steals.

Smith scored a game high 21 points for Maryville, and tied Walsh for game-high honors with 11 boards.  Janell Menard added 19 points.

Berry returns to action Tuesday, when it hosts Reinhardt at the Cage Center at 6 p.m.
