Coughlan Scores 22 Points, But YHC Defeats Berry 63-60

Berry's Brittany Coughlan scored a game high 22 points but host Young Harris defeated the Lady Vikings 63-60 Saturday afternoon in Young Harris, Ga.

The Lady Vikings trailed 51-38 with 10 minutes remaining in the game, but reeled off 13 consecutive points, eventually tying the score on a three-point shot by Alexa Evans with 4:45 left to play.

After Evans nailed the three pointer, YHC head coach Brenda Paul, who coached at Berry in the early 1980s, called timeout.  After the break, the Mountain Lions came out with a seven-point run, only to see Berry come back and tie the score at 60 points apiece with 1:19 remaining.

Neither team would score on its next possession.  With 24 seconds left, Coughlan fouled Lauren Smith, who hit her first free-throw attempt.  Her second shot was off the mark, but the ball bounced off a Berry player and out of bounds, giving the Mountain Lions another possession.

Berry was forced to put Young Harris on the free throw line with eight seconds remaining, and Nikki Winn buried both charity shots to give YHC its final 63-60 advantage.

Berry's Carol Lampley's three-point attempt at the buzzer was no good.

Lampley had 11 points and 10 rebounds for Berry, which fell to 5-8 overall.

Winn led three Mountain Lions in double figures with 17 points.  LaDondra Johnson added 15 and Smith scored 11.

The Lady Vikings are scheduled to return to action Jan. 15 at Spelman.
