ATLANTA — Berry College's Kassie Howard and Bayleigh Masterson earned a sweep of the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Pitcher and Player of the Week awards after a dominating performance over the past week, the league announced on Monday.
The duo led Berry to a 7-1 record last week, including wins over some of the top teams in the country at the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Tucson, Ariz.
Howard, a senior pitcher from Alpharetta, Ga., collected yet another Pitcher of the Week honor after earning five wins on the week, boasting a 1.46 ERA. She started the week with a win in the circle against Maryville on Tuesday. She tossed three innings, while allowing no hits and no runs, striking out seven Scots. She then earned her sixth win of the year against Maryville in the nightcap, tossing five complete innings, while allowing just four hits and two runs, striking out seven.
Howard then tossed five innings to earn the complete-game run-rule win over St. Thomas on Friday to open play at the NFCA Leadoff Classic. She allowed just four hits and two runs in the outing while striking out six batters. The following day, Howard earned her fourth win of the week against No. 5 Ill. Wesleyan, tossing four innings, while allowing four hits and one run, striking out six batters, and leading Berry to a 21-4 victory.
Howard rounded out the week with her fifth win on Sunday, as the Vikings bested Manhattanville 7-0. She threw all seven innings for Berry, allowing six hits and no runs while striking out 10 batters.
So far this year, Howard leads all of NCAA Division III with nine wins on the year. She is No. 2 in total strikeouts with 71.
