ATLANTA — Berry College's Kassie Howard and Bayleigh Masterson earned a sweep of the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Pitcher and Player of the Week awards after a dominating performance over the past week, the league announced on Monday.
The duo led Berry to a 7-1 record last week, including wins over some of the top teams in the country at the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Tucson, Ariz.
Masterson, a freshman infielder from Louisville, Ky., earned her first SAA Player of the week honor of her career after a monstrous week at the plate. She hit .586, including three home runs and 16 total RBIs. She started the week 2-for-3 at the plate in the Vikings' 10-0 victory over Maryville, adding six RBI in the contest, as well as a double and a homerun to lead all batters.
She then added an additional two hits in Berry's 9-3 nightcap win over Maryville, adding an additional four RBIs and her second homerun of the week. On Friday, Masterson remained hot at the plate, adding two doubles and an RBI in before going 2-for-3 in a win over St. Thomas. That same day, she added an additional RBI and a run in the outing. On Saturday, Masterson finished 4-for-5 at the plate in a victory over No.5 Ill. Wesleyan. In that game, she finished with two RBIs, two runs, and a sacrifice fly. She closed Saturday with two additional hits against Texas Lutheran, adding her third home run of the week, as well as two runs, a double and an RBI. Finally, Masterson finished Arizona play with a double and two runs, as Berry bested both Fontbonne and Manhattanville.
The freshman is currently leading the nation with 28 hits, 27 RBIs, 52 total bases and is tied with teammate Elisabeth Federici for the national lead in home runs with five. She ranks second in doubles with nine on the year.
