Berry Basketball Set to Begin Season Early Next Week

ROME, Ga. — The Berry College men's and women's basketball teams are set to begin their 2018-19 seasons at home on Monday and Tuesday of next week.

The women's team will open the year against Wesleyan on Monday at 6:00 p.m. in the Cage Center. The men are set to open against Huntingdon on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. at home.

Brief season outlooks for both teams can be found below.

Women's Basketball

The Vikings are coming off a 13-14 overall season with a 6-8 mark in the Southern Athletic Association (SAA). Head coach, Thomas Johnson, will enter his second year at the helm after leading the team to an improved conference record from the year prior. Berry was eliminated from the SAA Tournament last season in the semifinals, falling to the eventual conference champions and host Oglethorpe University Stormy Petrels.

Berry returns All-Conference selection Eveline Parsons for her junior season. Parsons averaged 9.9 points per game last season, leading the team with 1.6 3PT field goals made per contest.

Berry will open the 2018-19 campaign on Monday against Wesleyan in the Cage Center. The team will open SAA play before the holiday break on Dec. 7 against Oglethorpe. The bulk of SAA play after the new year will begin on Jan. 4 at Millsaps.

Men's Basketball

The Vikings are coming off an 11-18 overall record, but finished the season with a miraculous Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Tournament run to claim the program's first SAA title.

Head coach, Mitch Cole, will enter his first year at the helm of the Berry program. He was the assistant men’s basketball coach at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock for the previous two years. He spent the previous five seasons on the staff at Texas A&M and was formerly the head coach at current Southern Athletic Association (SAA) member, Birmingham-Southern College.

The Vikings return All-SAA nod Elijah Hirsh for his senior season. He was second on the team last year with 15.3 points per game and ranked top-five in the SAA with 8.6 rebounds per contest.

Berry opens the season at home on Tuesday against Huntingdon. The team will open SAA play against Oglethorpe at home on Dec. 7.
